The Leader

Leading Design at Scale Building Infrastructure for 54,000 Daily Active Riders

2020 - PRESENT

As UI UX Manager at Grab, I lead end-to-end design for multi-sided platforms processing up to 10 lakh orders daily. My role extends beyond interface design—I'm responsible for the systems, standards, and cross-functional frameworks that enable multiple teams to ship consistently at high velocity without losing quality or alignment.

FROM FIXING SCREENS TO BUILDING SYSTEMS

I’ve designed for every side of the ecosystem: riders earning their livelihood, merchants managing orders, ops teams coordinating logistics, and internal teams hiring and onboarding at scale.

This journey shaped my view of leadership in design. At scale, impact comes less from individual output and more from building clear systems, shared understanding, and trust across functions—so teams can make good decisions even when you’re not in the room.

I began managing designers and collaborating closely with engineering leads, product managers, and founders—reviewing decisions not just for usability, but for long-term system health.

Approach

Leadership at scale isn't about managing people—it's about building systems that enable teams to make better decisions independently. I've managed both design and development teams because the boundary between disciplines is where most friction happens. By understanding both sides—design intent and technical constraints—I can bridge gaps before they become blockers. Leadership means ensuring designers think about implementation feasibility and developers understand user impact, creating shared language and mutual respect.

My approach centers on three principles: - create clarity through documentation - establish repeatable processes that scale beyond individuals, and - build infrastructure that makes good choices the default. I lead by removing ambiguity—whether that's through design systems that answer "how should this work," audit frameworks that reveal hidden debt, or templates that standardize how we gather insights.

"The goal isn't control—it's leverage. Every template I create, every process I document, every system I establish multiplies the team's capability without requiring my direct involvement. That's how you scale from solo designer to systems leader: by building infrastructure that outlasts your tenure."

Achievements

MANAGED CROSS FUNCTIONAL TEAMS: Directly managed junior designers, conducting weekly critique sessions focused on decision rationale rather than aesthetics. Simultaneously managed web development team of 3 developers, overseeing code sanity checks, debugging standards, and defining KPIs and KRAs with structured quarterly review cycles. Bridged design and dev through shared documentation and collaborative problem-solving. PIONEERED AI INTEGRATION FOR ORGANIZATIONAL EFFICIENCY While using Design AI Tools in my workflow, I strategically introduced other AI tools across critical workflows to amplify team capability. - Manus AI for resume screening, reducing manual review time while improving candidate evaluation consistency. - Notebook LM during appraisal cycles to synthesize performance data and enable evidence-based conversations. - Notion AI for PRD generation, accelerating product documentation and maintaining consistency across specs. - Julius AI for Excel analysis, enabling rapid data pattern identification and faster decision-making without specialized skills. CONDUCTED COMPREHENSIVE UI DEBT AUDIT: Led platform-wide audit documenting inconsistencies, pattern violations, accessibility issues, and technical debt across all existing flows. Created prioritization framework based on user impact and technical effort. Presented findings to leadership with phased remediation plan, turning invisible problems into actionable roadmap. BUILT DESIGN RESOURCES AND WORKSHEETS Created reusable resources including rider interview guides, design kickoff meeting templates, usability test session checklists, participant consent forms, and comprehensive test plans. These resources elevated team quality, ensured research ethics, and enabled junior designers to conduct independent studies with confidence. BUILT BRIDGE BETWEEEN DESIGN AND ENGINEERING Through managing both teams, created shared language, mutual respect, and collaborative problem-solving culture. Reduced friction at handoff points, improved technical feasibility of designs, and elevated developer understanding of user impact. SHIPPED COMPANY'S FIRST TECHATHON WEBSITE Co-organized, designed, and shipped company's first-ever Techathon announcement and registration website in a single day, owning IA, page structure, copy hierarchy, and responsive layouts to support rapid internal rollout.

The through-line across all achievements: building infrastructure that scales, creating processes that multiply team capability, and establishing systems that work beyond individual contribution. Leadership measured not by features shipped, but by how much better the entire organization became at designing and building products that matter.
